Medical Wing Airman receives AF Combat Action Medal

Maj. Gen. Tom Travis, commander of the 59th Medical Wing (left), pins the Air Force Combat Action Medal on Staff Sgt. Jeremy Gassert Jan. 9 at Wilford Hall Medical Center. Airman Gassert suffered five pieces of shrapnel wounds to his legs and some to his fingers. He received the Purple Heart in April 2007. The Air Force Combat Action Medal was created to recognize Air Force members who were engaged in air or ground combat "outside the wire" in a combat zone. This includes members who were under direct and hostile fire, or who personally engaged hostile forces with direct and lethal fire.
